The Redskins have been the most valuable team in the NFL for seven years, according to Forbes Magazine, as they are valued at $1.423 billion. They are also the wealthiest and most profitable, netting over $100 million each year. The team ranks first for average game attendance as well.

The franchise was originally named the Boston Braves, changing their name in 1933 to the Boston Redskins. They have secured five NFL Championships, including three of the five Super Bowls they have appeared in. They moved to Washington, D.C. in 1937. Today the team's name raises controversy for its reference to Native Americans. But there has yet to be a substantial affect on the team from not changing its name.

After 1945, the team began a slow decline. After its early success, the city was endeared with the team. They only had three winning seasons between 1946 and 1968. In 1962, after refusing to integrate, the team was forced with an ultimatum from the Interior Secretary that they would be evicted from the stadium if they did not comply. They became the last team to do so.

Redskins News:

As the race to discover the forthcoming Washington Redskins schedule begins, and the hunt for football tickets by hungry fans gets underway, players are coming and going at the Redskins FedExField. The Redskins have announced that wide receiver David Patten has been released by the club. Patten's time at Washington was dogged by injury since he signed in March 2005, but Head Coach Joe Gibbs says that Patten was able to contribute to team morale and positive influence at FedExField and beyond. In fact, Gibbs says Patten emerged as something as a leader for the team in an unsung way.

"David is a fantastic person and meant a lot to this team in the two seasons he was with us," Gibbs said. "Despite battling through some injuries that limited his time on the field, he continued to serve as a leader on our team and was a positive influence on many of our players.

"We appreciate the contributions he made over the past two years." Patten was slowed by a hamstring injury most of last season. He was on the game day inactive list most of the year, and finished with just one reception for 25 yards. The wide receiver became a presence at FedExField, playing a great part in supporting the team, as much as the fans in the bleachers who'd gone out in search of Washington Redskins tickets and participated in tailgate parties outside the Redskins stadium. In 2005, Patten's knee injury after nine games sent him to the injured reserve's spot, and despite the heartbreak Patten remained as a super source of inspiration on the sidelines. Patten featured in nine games and finished with 22 catches for 217 yards. And there were also his glory years from 2001-04, when he helped the New England Patriots win three Super Bowl championships.

Time will tell how the reconfigured Washington Redskins roster will effect the outcomes of games in the coming football season, as fans begin to plan their strategy for buying football tickets and attending the Redskins games.
