They currently play for the Southern Division of the American Football Conference for the NFL. The franchise originated in Texas as the Houston Oilers, the team was a charter member of the AFL. They hold two AFL Championships before they became a part of the NFL during the merger of the two leagues.

Moving to Tennessee in 1997, while waiting for their new stadium, the team played in Memphis two seasons before settling in Nashville. They were the Tennessee Oilers before becoming the Titans in 1999. Playing in Memphis for two years caused confusion for fans who didn't wish to support a team that would leave for their rival city in only a short time. Nashville fans didn't want to drive 200 miles to see their hometown team, either, so the support was some of the lowest since the 1950s. But the team carried the legacy of the Oilers with them.

The team would continue on to make playoff appearances in 2002 and 2003, but had a disappointing 2004 season with a 5-11 record. Many key players were traded to free up money for other player acquisitions.
