They originally played for the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and switched in 1950 to the NFL. They were the first team to win five Super Bowls, and the only team to win every Super Bowl they played in. They are called "The Team of the Eighties" for the four Bowls they secured during that time period. Prior to the '80s the team had never won a Championship.

In 1970 the team won their first division title in the NFC West. They won their second division title the next year, losing once again to the Dallas Cowboys. In 1972 their third appearance in the finals they faced the Cowboys again, losing for the third time. OJ Simpson played his final season with the team during the 1979 season. They would not make the playoffs for the next eight seasons.

Since 2002 the team has seen disastrous times, because of injuries, a weak offense and inconsistent defense. In 2005 the death of offensive lineman Thomas Herrion was determined to be from heart disease.

The San Francisco 49ers earned an additional two compensatory picks in the 2007 NFL Draft, Monday March 26. The awarded picks include an additional third-round pick (97th overall) and an additional fourth round pick (135th overall), which fans hope might help boost the 49ers roster for the 2007 season.

A total of 32 compensatory choices were awarded to 16 teams. The Collective Bargaining Agreement, set by the NFL, stipulates that a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in a year is eligible for the compensatory draft picks. This year's compensatory awards are included in the third through seventh round picks dependent on the worth of compensatory free agents lost by individual teams.
