The San Diego Chargers were founded in 1960 and play in the Western Division of the American Football Conference.

They won one AFL title in 1963, and hold one conference championship from 1994 in the NFL after the merger of the two leagues in 1970.
The team was part of the Freezer Bowl held in Cincinnati against the Bengals, which they lost during the coldest game every played in NFL history in January 10, 1982. The next decade was a slide for the Chargers, who failed to make the playoffs from 1983 to 1991. In the 1994-95 season they made their first and only Super Bowl appearance again the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX.
But from 1996 to 2003, the Chargers had eight seasons in a row where they were .500 or worse. In 2004 the team captured the AFC West Division title, winning eight games in a row. They would finish the season at 12-4, and turn things around the next year, running a five-game winning streak, finishing with a record of 9-7.
