They are one of three other teams to have won the Super Bowl five times, having appeared in six Super Bowls in their history. They have hosted more conference championship games than any other NFL franchise, and have been in 13. They are also the only team to win the Super Bowl after being sixth seed. They were 2006 Champions.

The franchise was originally the Pittsburgh Pirates, the first ever pro-football team. In 1941 they became the Steelers to reflect the "blue-collar worker" ethic of the region. They made the playoffs for the first time in 1947, their last for 25 years. In 1974 new coach Chuck Noll hired four Hall of Famers in one draft year, Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, Mike Webster and John Stallworth. This draft is noted as the best ever.

The team became the first to win four Super Bowls in six years, and the first to win more than two. The Steelers made the playoffs for eight seasons in a row during the 70s. Today their rivals stand as the Ravens, Bengals and Browns.

Steelers News:

The Steelers off-season conditioning program started Monday March 26 with a high turn out from both veterans and younger players eager to make progress towards game fitness for the 2007 season. The players return to training was perceived as a good omen and sign of respect for their new coach. The Pittsburgh Steelers Heinz Field stadium, opened in 2001, stands patiently waiting for its heroes to return and begin the season in earnest. Pittsburgh's new head coach Mike Tomlin has been enjoying working with and getting to know the team, and wide receiver Cedrick Wilson took the chance to offer his opinion of Tomlin in these early days, before the rush for Pittsburgh Steelers tickets begins in a few months.

"He laid down the law," Wilson revealed. "He said it was good to be here, for each and every one of the guys. It was a great atmosphere, getting all the guys back. We got probably like 85 percent of the guys here and a lot more coming. That's a great way of showing the coach respect and showing the organization respect by showing up and trying to feed into this. So it's good to be back."

The voluntary program involves working with weight, undergoing drills on the field and engaging in tactical and fitness meeting with the coaching staff. Tomlin emphasized how much remaining in the city of Pittsburgh throughout the offseason means to a player.

"He basically said, hey, you can go train in Orlando or you can go train in Arizona where there is a nice climate, but you can't get out of those places what you can get here and that's football," said Wilson. "And that's what he's preaching, and that's what he's coaching. A guy like myself, I'm definitely taking heed of it."

This year's off-season program also involves the added requirement of familiarizing oneself with the new terminology in the playbook developed by offensive coordinator Bruce Arians. Arians has upgraded the playbook, transforming the terminology within. "You have all the coaches here and they're ready and willing to get us started, teach us new systems – our offensive system is going to change a little bit," Wilson said. "I'm very excited to have him as our offensive coordinator, it's just new things that we have to learn, different terminology, different route structure and things of that nature. I'm just happy to be here.

"It's different. There is different terminology. BA, he's a passing game type of guy. As a receiver we have to learn a lot, that's why this time here is so important for us right now. It's different terminology, totally different. You have some of the same things that are all around the league, but the terminology and the way he calls plays is different."

The Pittsburgh Steelers roster is bound to be as updated as the playbook, and the clamor for Steelers seats in the coming season will be as strong as ever, when the Pittsburgh Steelers fan club and others head for Heinz Field to watch some great football. It's hoped that this year Pittsburgh will see some Playoffs action, and maybe even a repeat of the 2005 Super Bowl win to bring the good times back to Pittsburgh.
