Originally called the New York Titans, they were renamed in 1963. With their win in Super Bowl III over the Baltimore Colts, the franchise holds the distinction of being the first AFL team to beat an NFL team in the AFL-NFL World Championship Game.

Player Joe Namath joined the team in 1965, setting a new standard for football as well as the Jets. By 1968, Namath had taken the team to the heights of their success, as they rose to the top of the AFL and qualified for the first Super Bowl.

The team made television history in the same year when the end of a close game between the Jets and the Raiders was interrupted by the movie "Heidi" just as the Jets had taken a late-scoring lead over the Raiders, at 32-29. There was 1:05 left in the game. Everywhere but the West Coast showed the film which had been promoted extensively for sweeps. Fans were upset about the dramatic finish they missed, as the Raiders ended with a 43-32 victory.

Jets News:

The New York Jets will be on the road Thanksgiving Day, 2007 for the first time since 1985. The Jets will travel to Dallas to face the Cowboys in a turkey dinner extravaganza, on the afternoon of November 22, participating in what Jets owner Woody Johnson describes as "a great American tradition."

The Jets played another holiday slot last year on Christmas night, beating the Dolphins 13-10 at Miami, and are now set to play their sixth Thanksgiving Day game in franchise history, only the third since 1963, and the first in the role as the Cowboys' annual opponent. The last time the Jets played on Thanksgiving, they lost 31-20 to Detroit in the Pontiac Silverdome in 1985.

The new season schedule is slowly being revealed, and this news came when NFL commissioner Roger Goodell released a partial list of the league's TV schedule at the annual NFL owners' meetings in Phoenix. Homes games at Giants stadium are expected to draw some big crowds, as next season's roster slowly takes shape. Giants tickets will be in high demand once September rolls around, and the seats will surely fill with eager football fans all there to watch their beloved New York Giants.
