The team appeared in the Super Bowl for the first time in 1986, losing to the Chicago Bears. They again lost when they made it in 1997, this time to the Green Bay Packers. But between the years of 2001 and 2004, the team became the second team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in four years, and the seventh to win Super Bowls consecutively.
In 1985 the team set an NFL record by winning three playoff games on the road before making their way to Super Bowl XX. The remainder of the '80s and early '90s were marred by a lack of playoff appearances. Team ownership and management were adjusted and head coach Rod Rust was removed after the worst season in franchise history in 1990; due to the 1-15 record, and a sexual harassment scandal involving a Boston Globe reporter.
The team won Super Bowl in 2001, 2003 and in 2004 the team set an all-time record, with an 18-game winning streak. They won Super Bowl XXXIX, making them the first team in six years to repeat a Super Bowl victory. The Pats also record the NFL's second perfect regular season in 2007-2008, going to 17-0 before loosing to the Giants in the Superbowl.
It was a heartbreaking first game for Pats fans, as they saw their beloved QB Tom Brady fall to injury and be out for the season. That upset the entire NFL world and shoved backup Matt Cassell into the bright lights of stardom. Matt has met the challenge and has shown that he can be effective as an NFL QB. Pats tickets are still selling like crazy even after Brady went down. The Pats are still doing very well and should be able to make the playoffs if they can hold of the Jets and Bills. It should be a great end to a trying season, so if you have not made it up to Foxborough yet, be sure to get yourself some Patriots tickets soon.
NFL owners attending the Phoenix annual meetings in late March of 2007 were to vote on a subject that is close to Patriot Coach Bill Belichick's heart. It is believed that several rule changes are to be discussed at the meetings, but the issue of overtime, particularly that of moving the opening kickoff from the 30- to the 35-yard line to try to decrease the advantage for teams that win the coin toss, will be one Belichick wishes to weigh in on. Despite The Patriots being ahead 8-1, with eight straight victories from overtime games since Belichick's first year at New England in 2000, Belechick believes the rules should be made more concrete when it comes to the effect overtime has on games and on game strategy.
"Football is a game that is played to the final gun," said Belichick. "There is a lot of strategy at the end of the game - you're protecting a lead, conserving time to get the ball back, and that all gets eliminated from the game in overtime.
"The way it is now, you're playing for field position and the score, and you lose that end-of-game strategy. I think that strategy is part of the intrigue that football brings."
Belichick wants a set period, say, 8 minutes, which is played out completely, to guarantee both teams a chance to regain possession and apply their individual game plans. This way the end-of-game excitement and uncertainty can be seized on by the more skilled outfits, and the superior workmanship rewarded. If overtime fails to generate a winner, then perhaps the sudden-death element could come into effect at that point.
There are other topics up for discussion, too, such as disciplinary matters, and the size of roster, etc. Belichick is nostalgic for the "dark ages" of football, and has stated that today's swelling team sizes are bad for the game and difficult to keep track of. Belechick has proved himself an influential and effective Head Coach since he arrived at Foxborough in 2000. His methods have extended the Patriots' excellent record in recent years, providing glittering prizes and ensuring that Patriots' tickets were something people sought avidly. New England have enjoyed great success since their 1996 Super Bowl loss to the Green Bay Packers, becoming only the second team ever to win three Super Bowls in four years, under the experienced eye of Bellichick.
New England Patriots football tickets will become available over the next few months for the coming season, and the schedule will hopefully be set alight by those Patriots stars that have been shining for some time now. The roster is currently undergoing offseason adaptations, but Bellichick's solid guidance is expected to provide New England Patriots fans with yet another great football season to look forward to. The improved Foxborough stadium provides a great day out for fans, and New England Patriots home games are always packed with happy campers, enjoying tailgate parties and filling the Foxborough seats and bleachers ready for the action.
