The team has secured their division 16 times, and is the first team to have lost four Super Bowls. They won one title in their history, the NFL Championship in 1969. The franchise played as the Minneapolis Marines/Red Jackets during the 1920s before becoming the Vikings in 1960.

During a 1975 game, the Vikings lost to the Dallas Cowboys when a controversial touchdown pass was thrown from a Cowboys quarterback to their wide receiver that became known as the Hail Mary. The team had a year to remember in 1998, with such great players as Randy Moss, Randall Cunningham, Robert Smith and Cris Carter. Cunningham had his best season ever, and the Vikings set a record with 556 total points scored. They were 15-1, becoming the first team with such a record to not reach the Super Bowl.

The team gained head coach Mike Tice in 2002, who was the team's third coach to be promoted along the team's coaching ranks, but the only to rise from playing for the team. He was replaced prior to the 2006 season with Brad Childress.
