Though their first-year record was 4-12, the next year was a success, as the Jaguars won six of their last seven games and a record of 9-7. This gave them the fifth seed in the AFC Playoffs.
By 1998, the team had become the only expansion team to make the playoffs three times in its first four seasons. As a Wild Card that year, they lost in the Divisional Round to the Jets. The next year they claimed the NFL's best regular season record that year, along with their best franchise record. This was said to have possibly been due to a lackluster schedule.
Over the next couple of years, the team's success rates dropped, as they lost a number of key members. Many of the losses were due to salary cap issues. The team held losing records for three seasons, causing a major management overhaul. The 2004 season was the 10th in the team's existence, and brought them back to a winning record. The next year they achieved their second best record to date.
The Jaguars have signed first-year punter Tony Yelk to a contract, March, 2007. Yelk was initially signed as an undrafted free agent by the Atlanta Falcons and spent last summer in the Falcons' training camp. Yelk was the team's kickoff specialist at Iowa State in 2005, recording 34 touchbacks on 67 kickoffs. The 6-1, 205-pound Yelk was a three season punter for Iowa State, punting 73 times for a 41.4 average with 19 punts inside the 20 as a junior.
Yelk is originally from Poynette, Wisconsin, and is set to wear the number four jersey. Fans at the Jacksonville Municipal Stadium next season can see Yelk and the rest of the Jacksonville Jaguars in action, and should probably secure Jaguars tickets as soon as possible for events upcoming.
