Originally the team was based in Ohio, and called the Portsmouth Spartans. They were purchased and moved to Detroit in 1934. The Lions hold four NFL Championship titles, winning the last in 1957, but never won a Super Bowl.

The 1950s marked the franchises' greatest successes, winning league championships in 1952, '53 and '57. They defeated the Cleveland Browns in each Championship game, before losing to them in the 1954 Championship. Star player Bobby Lane was traded in 1958 after leading the Lions to three NFL Championships and playing for nearly a decade with Hall of Fame play. Once he was injured the team traded him thinking he was done, and legend says Lane cursed the team, saying Detroit "would not win for 50 years." Since that time, the Lions have seen 49 years of futility, which many attribute to this statement.

Marvin Gaye tried out for the team in 1970, after the death of his duet partner Tammy Terrell. His plans to move into football were cut short when he was cut early on.

Lions News:

The Detroit Lions signed unrestricted free agent CB Travis Fisher March 2007, in a one-year deal. Fisher has played six years in the NFL and was drafted by St. Louis in the second round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He has started 53 of the 56 games he has played for the Rams the past five seasons.

Fisher played 14 games as a rookie in 2002, with 11 starts. His initial defense role came against Dallas in September of that year, and continued to start 11 of the final 12 games of the season. Through 2003 and 2004, he performed as the Rams' starting right cornerback making career-highs with 75 tackles and 12 pass defenses. He also tied the NFL lead spot with 205 total interception return yards. Fisher suffered a broken arm in 2004 and a groin injury in 2005. He also broke his arm against Seattle in November of 2006, but all appears to be well, as he makes his way into the roster at Ford Field for the coming 2007 season.

The Lions are primed for offseason conditioning, with coach Rod Marinelli stating that he is happy with the way things are working out for his team. The schedule is looming over the horizon, with both home games and away games bringing the promise of more thrills for game goers across the country. There is hope in Detroit for making the playoffs, and Detroit Lions tickets for stadium seats are expected to start moving sometime very soon.
