The 1996 season brought the team one game away from the Super Bowl. Mediocre play followed for the next few years, until the 2002 season when new management rearranged the team with the draft. New second draft pick Julius Peppers combined with what was called one of the best front four defensive lines in football. It was comprised of players Mike Rucker, Will Witherspoon and running back DeShaun Foster, defensive tackles Brentson Buckner and Kris Jenkins.
The team had hope going into the 2003 season, with some young new additions. After three years of making it to the NFC title match, they were headed to their first Super Bowl. Playing against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XXXVIII, it has been called one of the best played games in Super Bowl history. The Patriots would win this one, and in 2005 they would lose in the playoffs to the Seattle Seahawks.
The Carolina Panthers have released defensive end Al Wallace, the defensive end who's been at since 2002, has been released by the Carolina Panthers. Wallace came to Carolina from the Miami Dolphins prior to the 2002 season. He started four games for Carolina in 2002, two games in 2003, two in 2005 and two in 2006.
In 2006, Wallace played in every game for Carolina, starting twice during that time and making 30 tackles, three sacks, and four special teams tackles, among other notables. Wallace's 53-yard interception return contributed to the Panthers defeat of then defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 2003 season when Carolina went to the Super Bowl. The announcement comes following last week's news that the Panthers had signed free agents linebacker Terrence Melton and defensive tackle Stephen Williams.
The Panthers offseason strength and conditioning program begins Monday, March 19. The endurance and conditioning are major components of the Panthers' off-season training program. Emphasis on yardage and stamina are pushed to the limit, increasing the resistance week by week. There are a number of different programs in place at Carolina, each tailored to suit the various playing positions. It is expected that a footballer participating in this program will be in excellent footballing condition come the new season. One test, called a "gasser", involves sprinting across the field, two times in rapid succession. There is a minute's rest in between sprints, and a gasser is usually considered the icing on the cake at the end of summer.
