It was 1978 when the Falcons made the playoffs for the first time, in the "Big Ben Right" game. They progressed with a 9-7 record and beat the Eagles on Christmas Eve before being defeated by the Cowboys.

In 1971 the team saw their first winning season, winning their first nationally televised game as well. In the '80s the Falcons got a new logo, designed to look like an uppercase F. This came on the cusp of a successful season the first year of the decade. They would make it to the playoffs in 1982, and many changes were made in the years following to management and players alike. The team continued with losing seasons for most of the decade.

But in the 1990s the team started with the name "2 Legit to Quit" Falcons after the MC Hammer song became their theme. They were in the music video as well. The 1991 team made the playoffs as the sixth seed with a 10-6 record. This ended an eight-season losing streak. But 1998 would be their best season to date, as they rose to a 14-2 record and qualified for Super Bowl XXXIII. They are the most celebrated team in NFL history that year.

Ahead of offseason training for the Falcons, Bobby Petrino has been commenting on his first couple of months as Head Coach, as well as his feelings regarding the new season at the Georgia Dome, where Atlanta Falcons tickets will soon be snatched up. Some of the guys have to get heavier, some have to get lighter, so you have to make sure that they are getting ready for the season and understand the amount of work that they have ahead of them."

Petrino, while planning a number of innovative footballing strategies, also plans to focus on peripheral qualities in his team, unsung on the field but integral to success, such as work ethic and interpersonal chemistry. Petrino's entire staff have been viewing the team's performances via video, in order to ascertain the strengths and weaknesses, and it is believed that adaptability is one quality Petrino demands of those on the Atlanta Falcons roster. This adaptability covers not just on-field activity, but personal and logistical issues which may not appear to affect the football but which Petrino believes are tantamount to what goes on in front of the seats, bleachers and boxes. Adaptability involves performing at away games as well as home games, and ultimately it will translate to a great football experience for Atlanta Falcons fans at the Georgia Dome this coming football season.
