The franchise was originally named the Boston Braves, changing their name in 1933 to the Boston Redskins. They have secured five NFL Championships, including three of the five Super Bowls they have appeared in. They moved to Washington, D.C. in 1937. Today the team's name raises controversy for its reference to Native Americans. But there has yet to be a substantial affect on the team from not changing its name.

After 1945, the team began a slow decline. After its early success, the city was endeared with the team. They only had three winning seasons between 1946 and 1968. In 1962, after refusing to integrate, the team was forced with an ultimatum from the Interior Secretary that they would be evicted from the stadium if they did not comply. They became the last team to do so.
