They are one of three other teams to have won the Super Bowl five times, having appeared in six Super Bowls in their history. They have hosted more conference championship games than any other NFL franchise, and have been in 13. They are also the only team to win the Super Bowl after being sixth seed. They were 2006 Champions.

The franchise was originally the Pittsburgh Pirates, the first ever pro-football team. In 1941 they became the Steelers to reflect the "blue-collar worker" ethic of the region. They made the playoffs for the first time in 1947, their last for 25 years. In 1974 new coach Chuck Noll hired four Hall of Famers in one draft year, Lynn Swann, Jack Lambert, Mike Webster and John Stallworth. This draft is noted as the best ever.

The team became the first to win four Super Bowls in six years, and the first to win more than two. The Steelers made the playoffs for eight seasons in a row during the 70s. Today their rivals stand as the Ravens, Bengals and Browns.
