Originally members of the American Football League before it merged with the NFL in 1970, the team holds one AFL title, and has also won three Super Bowls. They once moved from Oakland to Los Angeles in 1982, returning to Oakland in 1995. They were almost named the Oakland Senors, after a local newspaper held a "name the team" contest. The name Raiders had finished third.

The team's slogan "Commitment to Excellence" came from the ownerships' goal of being as good in the NFL as the Yankees were in MLB. In 1983 the Los Angeles Raiders won Super Bowl XVIII. Since their return to Oakland in 1995, the team saw their most successful season in a decade during the 2000 season.

Rivals of the Raiders include the Denver Broncos, which goes back to the 1960s.The Broncos have won six of the last seven games between the teams. The teams shared coach Mike Shanahan, the Raiders firing him just four games into the 1989 season. The Kansas City Chiefs and San Diego Chargers also share rivalries with the Raiders.
