Originally the team was based in Ohio, and called the Portsmouth Spartans. They were purchased and moved to Detroit in 1934. The Lions hold four NFL Championship titles, winning the last in 1957, but never won a Super Bowl.

The 1950s marked the franchises' greatest successes, winning league championships in 1952, '53 and '57. They defeated the Cleveland Browns in each Championship game, before losing to them in the 1954 Championship. Star player Bobby Lane was traded in 1958 after leading the Lions to three NFL Championships and playing for nearly a decade with Hall of Fame play. Once he was injured the team traded him thinking he was done, and legend says Lane cursed the team, saying Detroit "would not win for 50 years." Since that time, the Lions have seen 49 years of futility, which many attribute to this statement.

Marvin Gaye tried out for the team in 1970, after the death of his duet partner Tammy Terrell. His plans to move into football were cut short when he was cut early on.
